You could curl up with a good book to celebrate National Book Lovers Day on August 9th or dig into a delicious S'mores on August 10th for National S'mores Day.

Hand sanitizer recall - Safety notice 
     The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that several alcohol-based hand sanitizers contain methanol. Sanitizers should contain ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. Methanol, whether absorbed through the skin or ingested, is toxic and can have severe effects such as blindness or death. The FDA has posted a list of hand sanitizers that contain methanol. Please refer to the link below for the most up-to-date information. 
SNS "Living in Harmony" music contest - Featured in C&EN
     The ACS local section (SNS-ACS) successfully completed the music contest activity, "LIVING IN HARMONY", as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Earth Day. This contest was created as a stay-at-home activity for Southern Nevada-Clark County School District kids. 
      C&EN took notice of the contest and mentioned it in their article on Chemists Celebrate Earth Week.

Project SEED - Call for 2021 mentors
     The Southern Nevada Section of the American Chemical Society would like to invite you to be a mentor for ProjectSEED in Summer 2021.
     This program provides chemistry research experience for economically disadvantaged high school students for 8-10 weeks during the summer. The project would provide a stipend for the students for up to 2 years. Each mentor can have 1-2 students.
     If you are interested in being a mentor, please send a short abstract for your project (example) and the number of students (1-2) you would be willing to mentor in your lab to SNS-ACS Project SEED coordinator Hokunani Keehu at [email protected].

Western Regional Meeting - Get involved!
     Tired of hearing about all the things you can't do right now? Well, you can still participate remotely with planning the 2022 Western Regional Meeting in Las Vegas! Get involved and be a part of the planning committee. You can join a technical program, publicity, arrangements, awards, K-12 education, and other committees. ACS Virtual Kids Zone - August 15th
     ACS announces a Virtual Kids Zone event taking place on Saturday, August 15 from 12-2pm Pacific. Host Bibiana Campos Seijo, Editor-in-Chief of Chemical & Engineering News, will lead viewers through four activities from experienced science educators, like reigning Miss America and biochemist, Miss Camille Schrier, chemistry teacher recently featured on local/national media, Jonte Lee, and other distinguished guests. The event will be offered in English (12pm Pacific) and Spanish (1pm Pacific).

Glues, tapes, slime and more...chemistry certaining has an attraction! Be sure to check future newsletters for information on how to volunteer for events or how to participate with your kids.
